Based on a six-generation beekeeping heritage, each Gisou product is inspired by and made with the finest, sustainably sourced ingredients from our very own Mirsalehi Bee Garden. We’re taking you through the journey of honey, how it’s made by bees, how it’s harvested, why we use honey in our products and the benefits of honey for hair and skin.  How honey is made For honey bees to produce honey and feed the colony, they collect pollen and nectar from flowers. Nectar is a sugary fluid secreted from flowers to encourage pollination by insects and other animals, collected by bees to make into honey.  Quick Pollination 101: Flowers attract pollinators with this delicious nectar in order to get fertilized. When a bee collects nectar and pollen from a flower, pollen from the flower’s stamens sticks to the hairs of the bee’s body.  When she visits the next flower, some of this pollen is rubbed off onto the flower’s stigma. How bees make honey: Flower nectar is collected by the bees, mixed with enzymes they produce themselves, and then stored in the honeycomb, where it’s broken down into simple sugars.  The fanning of the bees’ wings causes the water in the nectar to evaporate, creating the sweet liquid we call honey.  Once the water content of the honey in a cell is reduced to around 18%, the cell is capped with a layer of beeswax.  On average, bees in a single hive produce around 27 kilos (60lb) of honey, of which around 11 kilos (25lb) is excess honey. Honey harvesting Luckily for us, bees produce 2 to 3 times more honey than they can consume, so beekeepers can harvest the excess. At Gisou, we take a bee centered approach, which means we prioritize bee welfare and only take surpluses of honey if and when appropriate. We make sure our production cycles are in sync with the harvesting season of our key ingredients, honey and propolis. Experienced beekeepers with mature colonies can get up to three honey harvests per year: in July, August, and September. By late September (late March in the southern hemisphere), the beekeeping season ends. Here’s how to use the primer pre-styling: Step 1: If you’ll be curling or straightening your hair, you should always start with dry hair, as using a curler or straightener on damp/wet hair is damaging and the dampness will make your style drop very quickly. If you’ll be blow drying damp hair, then you can apply the product to damp hair before step 2. Step 2: Warm 1 to 2 pea-sized amounts of the primer up in the palms of your hands (1 for short hair, 2 to 3 for long or very long hair). Then run this through the lengths of your hair, brushing it through to make sure your hair is evenly coated. You can use the remainder towards your root area for added lift and volume.  Step 3: Apply the Propolis Infused Heat Protecting Spray to your hair to protect it from heat damage, and then curl, straighten or blow-dry as desired.  Note: The primer is not a heat protector. Don’t forget to use heat protection before using your styling tools!  Post styling The primer can also be used post styling to tame flyaways, create slick ponytails or buns, prevent frizz and give added hold to the style you’ve created. The product has a matte, non-greasy finish when creating slick looks.  Step 1: After putting your hair up in a slick bun or ponytail, use a bristle brush (a toothbrush or a spoolie will also do great!) to apply a small amount of primer to tame any flyaways and create the ultimate “clean girl” look. Air drying The primer can also be used on damp hair after washing to cut down drying time, enhance your natural waves or curls and prevent frizz as your hair dries naturally.  Step 1: After washing your hair, gently squeeze out the excess water using a hydrophilic towel or a cotton t-shirt.  Step 2: When your hair is damp, warm 1 to 2 pea-sized amounts of the primer up in the palms of your hands (1 for short hair, 2 to 3 for long or very long hair). Then run this through the lengths of your hair, brushing it through to make sure your hair is evenly coated. You can focus a little more product on the areas where you experience the most frizz. Step 3: Allow your hair to air dry and be amazed at how quickly it dries and how frizz-free it is! If you’d like to enhance your curls, scrunch the product into damp hair and then use the “plop” method, placing your hair in a hydrophilic towel or cotton t-shirt and leaving it to dry completely. The primer will give the hair some hold and define your curls whilst cutting down frizz. If you want to create beachy waves, braid your hair or leave it in a bun until totally dry.  Propolis Infused Texturising Wave Spray This is another great multi-tasking product. The Propolis Infused Texturising Wave Spray creates instant beachy waves, and adds body and volume for an effortless, lasting tousled look, without making hair heavy, sticky or dry. It is a very fine mist and can be likened to a lightweight sea-salt spray.  Beachy Waves Step 1:  Apply the product to damp hair after your washing routine. Make sure to spray it on evenly from an arms-length distance, brushing it through using a wide-tooth comb.  Step 2: Scrunch the hair to promote waves/curls, and then "plop" the hair into a cotton t-shirt to dry, or put your hair into a bun or braid to dry. Cause #1: Environment The weather plays a huge role in your hair’s moisture levels. Cold, dry weather, combined with indoor heating can suck the moisture from your hair. Hot, sunny weather also puts your hair under strain. UV-rays damage the hair and break down its pigment and the sun’s heat pulls the moisture from your strands.  Cause #2: Haircare routine As much as we all love a fresh head of highlights or a beautiful balayage, all chemical styling processes damage the hair structure and exacerbate dryness. High temperatures from styling also cause your hair to lose a considerable amount of moisture. Shampoo Sulfates We get it, your hair is oily, and you want a thorough cleanser to remove the oils and give you that squeaky-clean, oil-free feeling. There’s just one catch, often these shampoos contain harsh surfactants such as sodium lauryl sulfate. This ingredient creates clouds of cleansing foam that leave your hair feeling fresh and clean.  Unfortunately, that squeaky-clean feel actually works against grease-free hair in the long term. Using these harsh ingredients creates a vicious cycle of stripping hair of its natural oils causing your scalp to overproduce oil in an attempt to re-balance your oil levels. “Moisturizing” or “anti-frizz” shampoo While these kinds of shampoo are good for tackling dry or frizzy hair, they often contain heavy ingredients designed to create a fine coating on the hair, exactly what we want to avoid if your hair is already a little oily.  Honey Infused Hair Wash Enter the Honey Infused Hair Wash. Below we will provide you with a few of our top washing tips. Extend the time between washes We know it’s tough, but your hair will thank you in the long run. As we mentioned before, stripping your hair by washing it daily can cure those sebaceous glands to produce more oil. If you’re a daily washer, try washing every second day for two weeks, and then every third day for two weeks and so on. This way you can slowly adjust to fewer wash days. You can opt for a dry shampoo to help you through the transition.  Wash well Soak your hair: Make sure your hair is soaked before applying the shampoo - this is important as it will help you easily distribute the product throughout your hair. Less is more: apply 2 to 3 pumps of the Honey Infused Hair Wash into the palms of your hands, mixing with a small amount of water. Rub the palms together to create a gentle lather. Keep in mind that this product won’t create huge clouds of foam — this doesn’t mean you need more!  Focus on your scalp: once you’ve lathered the product, focus it on your scalp and take 2 to 3 minutes to gently massage the product in.
