Every year on May 20, the world celebrates one of the most powerful creatures on the planet: the bee. This World Bee Day, we shine a light on the essential role bees and pollinators play in sustaining our ecosystems, food security and the health of our planet, while honoring the bee garden at the heart of our story. For us, World Bee Day is also a reminder of where our journey and our honey infused hair care begin.
The Mirsalehi Bee Garden: Where Our Story Starts
The Mirsalehi Bee Garden is at the heart of Gisou and the source of our proprietary Mirsalehi Honey, used in every product we create. Our founder, Negin Mirsalehi, is a sixth-generation beekeeper who learned the craft from her father, who established the garden after relocating from Iran to the Netherlands in the 1980s, bringing the family’s 200-year expertise and deep passion for bees with him.
Even as the Gisou Bee Garden has inspired a global community, we remain committed to ensuring every product contains honey sustainably sourced from those same gardens. We let the bees guide our beekeeping practices, only ever harvesting surplus honey and prioritizing bee welfare at every step of the process. This bee-first approach sits at the core of our honey powered innovation and underpins everything we do each Bee Season.
Meet Our Beekeeper-in-Chief, Negar Mirsalehi
World Bee Day is also a moment to celebrate the people behind the hives. Negar is our Beekeeper-in-Chief and Negin’s older sister, and she oversees the care of the family’s hives and the hand-harvesting of Mirsalehi Honey. She personally tends to and pampers the bees to produce the highest quality honey used in every formula. Since officially stepping into the role in 2022, Negar has led our bee education initiatives, welcoming community members, competition winners and retail partners into the bee garden. From learning how to spot the queen bee to checking honey stores inside the hives, these immersive experiences bring the family’s beekeeping traditions to life and deepen appreciation for bees within the Gisou community.
