As our Beekeeper-In-Chief, Negar Mirsalehi is excited to bring you along with her beekeeping activities! “While bee season has sadly come to an end, our bees are busy getting ready for fall and winter. There are a few things us beekeepers can do to support the bees before the first frost arrives. Keep in mind that even though we help our bees to get ready for winter, interfering too much can work against the bees.” How bees survive during the winter The main task for honey bees during winter is to keep the hive warm to survive winter. When temperatures drop, bees retreat to their hive and form a winter cluster to keep warm.  It is said that honeybees make honey during spring and summer because they don’t hibernate the way mammals do, so they need food to survive winter. Even though pollen is essential for bees during the bee season, honey is what gives them the most energy during winter. They are very careful not to waste any of their honey stores, which is why drones are evicted from the hive at the end of summer, as I mentioned in our last Beepeeking update. The main causes of winter losses are starvation, varroa mite infestation and excess moisture in the hives. All of these can be managed by the beekeeper. Winterizing bee hives is done during fall and consists of a few steps which will help your bees successfully live through winter. Checklist for winterizing bee hives So how do you winterize beehives? This is what beekeepers can do during fall to help the honey bees prepare for winter: Make sure you have checked and treated your colonies for varroa mites. Combine weaker colonies because a weak colony will not survive winter. Check the bees’ food storage and feed them to prepare them for winter. Remove unnecessary space in the hive. Give the bees in the smallest space possible to overwinter by removing empty boxes. This will prevent heat diffusion, keeping the bees from wasting unnecessary energy while they warm up the hive. If your hive is located in a windy spot, a wind buffer will help regulate the temperature inside the hive. Reduce the size of the hive entrance with an entrance reducer. This helps to defend against opportunists who want to rob the hive. When bees cluster, they produce heat. When that heat rises, condensation occurs, which causes (sometimes freezing) water droplets to fall onto the bees. To stop this from happening, an airflow system is required.  Check with other local beekeepers to prepare for local weather conditions. Month-by-month beekeeping guide to prepare for fall and winter August: Hive inspection and varroa mite control Make sure that the colony has a laying queen. Look for eggs, larvae and sealed brood. Make sure your colony is healthy and strong for winter. Winter bees have larger fat bodies to help them live longer. This is of great benefit since the colony has limited capabilities to raise more brood during the cold winter months.  Varroa mites feed on their fat bodies, therefore keeping the varroa population as low as possible during the winter is critical. We also check our colonies for varroa mites and we treat them on time before the winter bees are raised. September: Check on their food Make sure that when you harvest honey, only to take the surplus of honey in order for the bees to have enough food storage for winter. In case there is not enough, make sure you feed the bees with sugar syrup, sugar fondant or with honeycombs from other colonies.  An experienced beekeeper like my dad just lifts the back of the hive with one hand to determine whether they need extra food or not. Reduce the hive entrance when feeding and feed in the evening to prevent robbing. Always try to finish winter-feeding by early September. October: Winterizing bee hives  When bees cluster in the winter, they produce heat and evaporation. The water droplets rise with the heat coming off the cluster and collect at the top of the hive. Away from the cluster, the water cools and approaches freezing. This water can drip down on the cluster, freezing and killing the bees. An airflow system, which makes sure that wet air can leave the hive and minimize condensation, is required to prevent this. What else needs to happen in winter? In winter it gets too cold to intervene with the hives. When temperature rises outside, bees will leave the hive momentarily to relieve themselves of waste (cleansing flights).  In December we conduct another varroa treatment, and besides that we patiently wait for spring to arrive for the first spring inspections!

We’re taking you through the journey of honey, how it’s made by bees, how it’s harvested, why we use honey in our products and the benefits of honey for hair and skin.  How honey is made For honey bees to produce honey and feed the colony, they collect pollen and nectar from flowers. Nectar is a sugary fluid secreted from flowers to encourage pollination by insects and other animals, collected by bees to make into honey.  Quick Pollination 101: Flowers attract pollinators with this delicious nectar in order to get fertilized. When a bee collects nectar and pollen from a flower, pollen from the flower’s stamens sticks to the hairs of the bee’s body.  When she visits the next flower, some of this pollen is rubbed off onto the flower’s stigma. How bees make honey: Flower nectar is collected by the bees, mixed with enzymes they produce themselves, and then stored in the honeycomb, where it’s broken down into simple sugars.  The fanning of the bees’ wings causes the water in the nectar to evaporate, creating the sweet liquid we call honey.  Once the water content of the honey in a cell is reduced to around 18%, the cell is capped with a layer of beeswax.  On average, bees in a single hive produce around 27 kilos (60lb) of honey, of which around 11 kilos (25lb) is excess honey. By late September (late March in the southern hemisphere), the beekeeping season ends. As our Beekeeper-In-Chief, Negar Mirsalehi is excited to bring you along throughout the bee season! "We’ve officially kicked off Honey Month at Gisou as a celebration of beekeepers, honey bees and of course, honey. September is the month that marks the end of our Bee Season in the Netherlands, which means it’s time for the last honey extraction of the season.  After September, we no longer extract honey as the bees start preparing for winter and they need enough honey stored away to survive the cold months. Today I’m taking you along as I harvest and extract Mirsalehi honey from the Bee Garden step by step!" Honey harvesting steps Step 1: Gear up Make sure to wear protective clothes, a hat with veil and gloves before opening up the hives. Make sure you have the right tools with you as well, such as a hive tool and an uncapping tool, smoker and bee brush. Don’t wear any perfume or any other scented products which attract bees.  Step 2: Open the hives & remove the bees Choose your first honey chamber of the hive and open it slowly and gently. Working slowly reduces the risk of instigating bees that might assume that you’re a threat. Bees are very sensitive to fast movements. Step 3: Examine the honeycombs Capping occurs when the cells of the honeycombs are plugged by the bees for storage purposes. A honeycomb at 80% cap is one in which at least 80% of the cells have been plugged. A honeycomb which has less than 80% capped cells is not ready to be harvested. A visual inspection is generally sufficient to know whether a comb is ready.  Step 4: Remove the frames You will need to remove the bees from the honeycomb by gently shaking them off and use the bee brush to brush off the remainder of the bees. Not even one bee should stay behind on the comb. You need to work fast so preferably work together with another beekeeper. Which makes it more fun! Remove the honey frames from the supers or honey chambers and place them in a closed container or separate super. You might have multiple supers to remove frames from, so do them one at a time. Store the honeycombs in a cold and dark place until you’re ready to extract the honey. Honey extraction steps Step 1: Uncapping the honeycombs The extraction of the honey should take place inside, preferably in a kitchen. Never do this outside and especially not near the bees.  You’ll need the uncapping fork or knife to uncap the honeycombs. Use whichever uncapping tool you have to remove the caps on both sides of the honeycombs. From there, the open honeycombs go into your extractor. Only uncap as many honeycombs as can fit into your extractor to prevent any honey waste.  Step 2: Extracting the honey A honey extractor is essentially a centrifuge. You place the honeycombs in racks inside the tank and close the extractor. The tank will spin, utilizing centrifugal force to extract honey and deposit it in the bottom of the tank. Within 10-15 minutes, all the honey will be out of the honeycomb! Step 3: Straining the honey Your final step is to strain and bottle the honey. Use a double sieve or cheesecloth to catch the wax and impurities as the honey starts pouring out of the extractor. You may want to pour the honey into a temporary jug where it can sit for 12 hours to let the air bubbles settle out. Step 4: Bottling the honey Next, store your honey in clean glass jars with airtight lids. You can use plastic containers as well, but make sure they have never been used before as this may contaminate the honey with residual flavors or odors. Now it’s time to enjoy the bees’ magical labor. Enjoy the honey with your breakfast, in hot drinks, dressings or use it on wounds to promote faster healing. Sharing your honey with friends and family is mandatory! Propolis is a resin-like substance, whose make-up varies depending on the trees and flowers the bees have access to. The main ingredient of propolis is resin. Bees use resins to create propolis which they use in the construction and repair of the hive. Curling your hair in alternating directions will make your curls look more natural. It will also help to prevent your curls from clumping together, providing a softer,  more bouncy look. The larger and thicker the strands of hair you wrap around your curling iron, the looser your curls will be. The longer you keep your hair wrapped around the barrel of the curling, the tighter your curls will be. Holding some pieces a little longer, some a little shorter, will result in some tighter curls mixed with some looser ones. This can be a fun technique to play around with when you want to switch up your look.  Taking smaller sections will produce longer-lasting, tighter curls that will loosen gradually. This is an excellent strategy for those who only want to curl their hair every two or three days. Don’t touch your curls until they are completely cool. Touching them too soon will make them fall out too quickly. If your curls are a little tighter than you want them to be, once they’re completely cool, you can brush through them with a wide-tooth comb to loosen them. Just be careful not to overdo it or you may relax them too much. How to Get Loose Curls Step by Step Here’s how to make loose curls step-by-step. Once you get the technique down, try experimenting using the tips above to get different effects and see what you like best! Step 1: Start with Clean, Conditioned Hair Begin your styling routine with clean hair. Our Honey Infused Wash and Go Combo cleanses and conditions without stripping the hair of natural oils. It’s formulated to gently remove buildup, resulting in silky, shiny, hydrated hair that’s ready to style. Step 2: Prep Your Hair for Styling Prep your hair for styling by placing a pea-sized amount of Polishing Primer into your palms. Rub your hands together to warm the product and then work it through your towel-dried hair from root to tip. Follow up with our Heat Protectant Spray to prevent heat damage during styling.  Step 3: Dry Your Hair Completely Before Curling Spritz your hair with Wave Spray before drying. This will provide texture and lasting hold without being stiff or sticky. If your hair is straight or naturally wavy, you can allow it to air dry completely before styling. For naturally curly hair, a smoothing blowout with a round brush will yield the best results.  Step 4: Section the Hair Once your hair is completely dry, divide it into top and bottom sections for easier curling. If you have very long or thick hair, you might find that three or four sections work best. Step 5: Curl the Bottom Section of Your Hair Starting with the bottom section of your hair, take a 1 to 2-inch piece and wrap it around your curling wand, holding the wand in a vertical position. Work your way around the entire bottom section curling each piece in an alternating direction. This will give you the most natural-looking loose curls.  Negin’s pro-tip for long-lasting curls: Allow each curl to cool in the palm of your hand before dropping it. If you want your curls to last an extra long time, consider clipping each individual curl as you go and allow them to set until completely cool. If you have more than two sections, curl the remaining sections using the same technique until you reach the top section of your hair.  Step 6: Curl the Top Section of Your Hair Now, let down the top section of hair. Spritz the roots with Wave Spray and use your fingers to add volume and lift to the top layers. Curl this entire section away from your face, leaving the front pieces for last. When you get to the front pieces, smooth your curling wand down the hair and pull it away from your face. Create a bend by pausing parallel to the cheekbone, leaving the ends out. This will provide a face-framing effect that’s super flattering on any face shape or hair type. Step 7: Finish Your Style If you’ve clipped up your curls, the longer you leave them clipped up, the bouncier your curls will be. For the loosest waves, take out the clips as soon as the hair cools. For more defined curls that last longer, leave the clips in for 30 minutes to an hour after they cool. Once you take out the clips, give your hair a mist of wave spray and fluff up the roots gently with your fingers. However, flat irons tend to get hotter than curling irons, which could lead to damage, especially if you have fine, damaged, or dry hair. A curling wand with a 1-inch barrel creates the longest-lasting, most natural-looking loose curls on all hair lengths. It’s the most versatile sized barrel for creating a variety of effects, from beachy waves to tighter curls. Wrapping Up Now that you know how to loose curl, try different techniques to change your look. For example, you can leave the ends out for a beachy wave. Each hair has a protective outer layer (the cuticle) which protects the inner layers (cortex and medulla). On healthy hair, the cuticle lies closed and flat, giving the hair a smooth and shiny appearance. When hair is damaged, the cuticle can crack, lift or even be removed causing split ends and tangles. The raised cuticles also allow more moisture to escape. All in all, this makes the hair look dull, dry, and frizzy, and more prone to breakage.  We know it’s extremely difficult to put down the styling tools when you’re already in this position. We are here to tell you how to prevent damaged hair before it starts, so that bad hair days are a thing of the past. How you’re damaging your hair & how to prevent hair damage Heat & sun damage This may seem obvious, but heat is one of the main ways most of us damage our hair. Whether it's styling tools, hot water or even the sun, heat strips the hair of moisture, lifting and cracking the hair’s cuticle, making it more vulnerable to breakage.  Prevent damage from heat by: Using heat protection before heat styling such as our Propolis Infused Heat Protecting Spray which protects the hair up to 230ᵒC/446ᵒF. It also contains a UV filter to prevent sun damage, which makes it suitable to use before exposing your hair to the sun. Using heat tools that have a wide range of heat settings and using the lower settings when possible. Instead, pull out your soft microfiber towel or even a simple cotton T-shirt. Both fabrics are softer and more gentle on your strands, and absorb the water without causing frizz.  Over washing Over-washing strips the hair of its natural oils, and can remove its protective layer (the cuticle), leaving your hair looking like it’s seen better days. In honor of Honey Bee Day and after our community’s overwhelming excitement and support for Bee Learning Chapter 1, we’ve now launched the final two chapters of our Bee Learning Course. We can’t wait for you to continue learning about bees and beekeeping & hope to inspire more of you to help us care for the creatures that care for our planet.  Next to educating yourself about the bees by taking our Bee Learning Course, there are a few other things you can do to help support the honey bees. Keep reading to find out how you can help them! Why do bees play an essential role in our ecosystem? Honey bees are the most important pollinators in the world which make them fundamental to the health of our natural ecosystem. Pollination is the basis of human nutrition, enabling the production of fruits, nuts and seeds. Honey bees are the world's most important pollinator of food crops - they are responsible for nearly a third of our global food crops and most flowering plants. Vegetables such as broccoli, asparagus and cucumber rely on the pollination of bees, as do apricots, strawberries, apples, tomatoes, almonds, coffee and even cotton!  Why are bee populations in decline? Honey bee populations have been declining worldwide due to widespread pesticide use, climate change, disease, and habitat loss. Here’s why: Until 50 years ago, areas which are now used for agriculture had a variety of wildflowers which sustained healthy bee populations. The pressure on farmers for increased output means there’s no longer any space for wild nature on farmlands. This leads to the decline in bee populations, which is amplified even further by the use of harmful pesticides in agriculture. Today’s main culprits for declining bee populations:  Intensive farming practices - less space for wild nature Mono-cropping - lack of diversity in bee nutrition + increased need in pesticide use  Excessive use of agricultural chemicals/pesticides - harmful for the bees  Higher temperatures associated with climate change - altering the relationship between flowering plants and bees, causing nutritional stress How to support the honey bees Now that we know why bees are important for our ecosystem and how they’re being threatened, here are some easy things you can do to support the bees! 1. Go organic  Opt for organic produce and avoid the use of chemicals in your garden. The use of insecticides and herbicides will weaken and even kill your bees, so avoid these at all cost, whether you’re buying produce or tending to your own garden.  Research shows that pesticides linger in the pollen and nectar of flowering plants, which is the main source of food for honey bees. These pesticides weaken the bees’ immune systems and make them more susceptible to disease. Avoid herbicides that kill nectar-producing plants Buy pesticide-free plants Remove weeds by hand Shop your produce locally and organic 2. Plant a variety of flowers Bees rely on flowering wildflowers, shrubs and trees to provide food in the form of nectar and pollen. Plant indigenous wildflowers every summer (wherever you can!) Here’s what you should take into account: Flowers bloom across the different seasons, from early Spring to late Fall. Choose a variety of flowers that will bloom throughout the seasons. Opt for native wildflowers, meaning flowers which naturally occur in the region or ecosystem your hives are located in.  If you have a garden, don’t mow your lawn too often - the little flowers such as dandelions and clover are the perfect food source for bees. 3. Provide water  If you have a garden, rooftop or balcony, you can provide water for the bees. Bees return harvested water to their hive and use it to cool down the hive by fanning their wings. Like a mini air conditioning system!  You can create a little bee bath using a shallow plate filled with water and flat stones, for the bees to land on safely without the risk of drowning. Make sure to refresh the water every so often.  4. Support your local beekeeper By buying local honey and other bee products, you support local beekeepers and their honey bees, and in turn also the health of the environment in your immediate surroundings. Local raw honey is delicious and full of nutrients!  The Gisou Bees Project This is also why we’ve set up The Gisou Bees Project: a special Gisou initiative in support of urban beekeeping practices to fight the declining bee populations worldwide. With this project, we show our support to urban beekeeping efforts by placing urban Gisou beehives in major cities around the world. We work together with local beekeepers who look after the Gisou bees on our behalf.  Not only do we support urban bee populations this way, but we also support local beekeepers who continuously care for the bees and raise awareness in their local communities. As we place our Gisou urban beehives in a city to improve the health of the city’s ecosystem, we therefore concurrently aim to carry out part of our mission - to raise awareness for the importance of bees.

We can’t all be blessed with thick, luscious locks. Many of us have to find ways to make fine or thin hair work, even though it often refuses to hold curls, easily falls flat, and can get oily real quick.  Fine or thin hair often requires a different routine and specific hair care products for fine hair. But first, let’s talk about the difference between fine and thin hair! What is fine hair? Having “fine” hair means that your individual hair strands are thin in diameter as opposed to thick hair which has coarse strands. To know if your hair is fine, simply take a strand of hair and lay it on a table next to a piece of sewing thread. If your hair is much thinner than the thread, you probably have fine hair. If it is almost the same as the thread then it is medium, and if it is the same or thicker than the thread then your hair is coarse.  The difference between fine hair and thin hair Fine hair can sometimes be confused with “thin” hair, which means that your hair may have fewer strands of hair on your head resulting in less volume. Thin hair means that you have fewer strands of hair growing, no matter how thick the hair strands.  Common fine or thin hair concerns: Fine or thin hair can get greasy quickly Curls don’t hold well  Styles can fall flat Hair is easily weighed down Fine hair can be hard to style Fine or thin hair is fragile and susceptible to breakage In this article we’ll cover how to care for fine hair as well as how to care for thin hair, and which products are most suitable for fine or thin hair. Learning to work with, and style fine or thin hair will help you get the most out of it, so let’s get into the best hair products for fine hair and how to use them!  Routine & product tips for fine or thin hair 1. Scalp treatment for thin or fine hair No matter your hair type, healthy hair begins with a healthy scalp. We recommend our fine-haired community use our Honey Infused Scalp Treatment once every two weeks. This will help moisturise and nourish the scalp, as well as balance out oil production. As an added bonus, the act of massaging the scalp will stimulate circulation which brings more nutrients to the hair follicle, which can in turn promote hair growth. 2. Shampoo for fine hair Many people with fine or thin hair feel the need to wash it daily, as it tends to get oily quickly. However, we recommend avoiding the daily wash and aiming for two to three times per week to avoid stripping hair (which, ironically, can result in the overproduction of oils). Make sure you really focus your shampoo on the scalp area, not the lengths of your hair.  3. This is important, as fine or thin hair can easily be broken or damaged when it is wet or too damp. This will also help to prevent frizz as your hair dries.  As fine hair is prone to tangling and breakage, the leave-in conditioner is a great product to use between washes to avoid knotting and harsh brushing. Apply the product from an arm’s length distance, brushing through to make sure it has been evenly distributed You can then style as desired.  5 tips on how to care for fine hair Aside from using the right products, there are some other easy things you can do to care for your fine or thin hair. Here are some of our best tips: Sleep on a silk pillowcase. Silk reduces friction and is less likely to damage your hair as you twist and turn your head throughout the night, often causing that “bedhead” look you want to avoid. It keeps your hair soft and healthy. Wash with cool or cold water. This helps your hair and scalp to retain natural oils, which keeps the scalp and hair hydrated and healthy. Use a brush with soft or gentle bristles that doesn’t tug at the hair. Also try to avoid brushing your hair when it’s wet and always use a lightweight leave-in conditioner before brushing through.  Air dry your hair to 75% before blow drying. This will shorten the drying time as well as minimize heat damage.  Limit the use of heated styling tools. Try some heatless curling techniques if you do want curls but don’t want to damage your hair.  Don’t tie your hair too tight and use silk hair ties. This will avoid unnecessary breakage. Use Hair Oil sparingly. While fine or thin hair tends to get oily more quickly, it's still a good idea to use Hair Oil on your ends to seal split ends, add shine and infuse dry ends with a hydration boost.   Wrapping up While fine or thin hair can sometimes feel tricky to take care of, following the correct care and styling routine can definitely help you get more out of your locks!

Take our online Bee Learning Course to learn all the basics!  Honey bees in August August can be a challenging month for bees. Not only is it hot, but there are also less nectar sources available (as the flowers have passed their peak) compared to spring and early summer, which may lead to robbing.  Although August is considered to be the height of summer, it’s also the time to start thinking about getting the bees into shape for winter. This means making sure they have enough food sources but also checking for diseases and pests.  The start of the beekeeping year Although we’re nearing the end of the bee season, August simultaneously marks the start of the new beekeeping year. This is because all the actions you take as a beekeeper now, will influence how well your colonies will do next season. If you take the right steps now, you will help your bees survive through winter and thrive in spring!  What is robbing + how to stop it Robbing is a term used to describe honey bees who invade another hive to steal the stored honey. Robbing bees enter the hive, uncap capped cells of the honeycomb and fill their honey stomachs with honey from the other hive, and bring it back to their own hive. Bees fight each other in the process, and many bees unfortunately die.  If you notice a hive being robbed, you need to intervene immediately, because it’s hard to stop once it begins. Here are some steps beekeepers take to prevent or stop robbing: Make hive inspections quick Reduce the hive entrance to a very small opening, so guard bees have a better chance at guarding the hive and keep out robbing bees and wasps If your hive is weak, you can consider combining it with another hive to make it stronger.  Queen & colony evaluation  During this time of year, colonies start to prepare for winter, meaning they start rearing winter bees. These worker bees are different from summer worker bees. Winter bees live much longer than summer bees, 20 weeks as opposed to 6 weeks! Winter bees are also called fat bees because their bodies are larger. They have special organs in their abdomens which allows them to store more food to survive through winter.  It’s important for the bee colony to be healthy as it’s essential to survive winter. If a colony is weak, it’s possible to combine with a stronger or healthier colony to increase their chances of survival. Requeening August is also a good time to start thinking about requeening, if and when necessary. Requeening means a beekeeper replaces the current queen bee with a new one. It’s important to have a young, strong and productive queen in the colony who will survive winter and be strong enough once spring comes around to start laying eggs. Your hive is only as strong as the queen that leads it! Drone eviction August is also the time that drone bees (male bees) get kicked out of the hive by the worker bees. They serve no purpose after mating season, so they are expelled from the hive. The worker bees only tolerate a small number of drones in the hive during winter, in case of an emergency. Varroa mite check & treatment Beekeepers monitor their hives for varroa mites at least once a month during bee season, and more frequently during late summer. Varroa mites are a parasite that transmit bee viruses and also weaken and kill honey bee colonies. It’s therefore extremely important to monitor the bee colonies for mites and use the right treatment to remove the varroa mites while not harming the bees.  Provide water  August is usually a hot month, so beekeepers must provide enough water for their bees! Bees return harvested water to the hive and use it to cool down the hive by fanning their wings like a mini air conditioning system! The further they need to fly to find a water source, the more energy they’ll need to spend on it.  Tip: If there’s no natural water source nearby, you can create a bee bath using a shallow plate filled with water and flat stones, for the bees to land on safely.
