Beautiful hairstyles and great styling products go hand in hand. The key is to choose the right hair styling products and apply them correctly. You’ll notice you can achieve better results, and your hairstyle will last much longer, too! We’ll share how to use and apply our 3 styling favorites to achieve the best results. Propolis Infused Polishing Primer This polishing primer is a very lightweight product, with a creamy texture that is weightless when applied. It is a real multitasker that can be used in four main ways: Pre-styling The primer prepares hair for your styling routine. It prevents and diminishes frizz, reduces drying time and ensures optimal workable hold while using heated styling tools. The result is enhanced hair texture with more volume and definition. Here’s how to use the primer pre-styling: Step 1: If you’ll be curling or straightening your hair, you should always start with dry hair, as using a curler or straightener on damp/wet hair is damaging and the dampness will make your style drop very quickly. If you’ll be blow drying damp hair, then you can apply the product to damp hair before step 2. Step 2: Warm 1 to 2 pea-sized amounts of the primer up in the palms of your hands (1 for short hair, 2 to 3 for long or very long hair). Then run this through the lengths of your hair, brushing it through to make sure your hair is evenly coated. You can use the remainder towards your root area for added lift and volume.  Step 3: Apply the Propolis Infused Heat Protecting Spray to your hair to protect it from heat damage, and then curl, straighten or blow-dry as desired.  Note: The primer is not a heat protector. Don’t forget to use heat protection before using your styling tools!  Post styling The primer can also be used post styling to tame flyaways, create slick ponytails or buns, prevent frizz and give added hold to the style you’ve created. The product has a matte, non-greasy finish when creating slick looks.  Step 1: After putting your hair up in a slick bun or ponytail, use a bristle brush (a toothbrush or a spoolie will also do great!) to apply a small amount of primer to tame any flyaways and create the ultimate “clean girl” look. Air drying The primer can also be used on damp hair after washing to cut down drying time, enhance your natural waves or curls and prevent frizz as your hair dries naturally.  Step 1: After washing your hair, gently squeeze out the excess water using a hydrophilic towel or a cotton t-shirt.  Step 2: When your hair is damp, warm 1 to 2 pea-sized amounts of the primer up in the palms of your hands (1 for short hair, 2 to 3 for long or very long hair). Then run this through the lengths of your hair, brushing it through to make sure your hair is evenly coated. You can focus a little more product on the areas where you experience the most frizz. Step 3: Allow your hair to air dry and be amazed at how quickly it dries and how frizz-free it is! If you’d like to enhance your curls, scrunch the product into damp hair and then use the “plop” method, placing your hair in a hydrophilic towel or cotton t-shirt and leaving it to dry completely. The primer will give the hair some hold and define your curls whilst cutting down frizz. If you want to create beachy waves, braid your hair or leave it in a bun until totally dry.  Propolis Infused Texturising Wave Spray This is another great multi-tasking product. The Propolis Infused Texturising Wave Spray creates instant beachy waves, and adds body and volume for an effortless, lasting tousled look, without making hair heavy, sticky or dry. It is a very fine mist and can be likened to a lightweight sea-salt spray.  Beachy Waves Step 1:  Apply the product to damp hair after your washing routine. Make sure to spray it on evenly from an arms-length distance, brushing it through using a wide-tooth comb.  Step 2: Scrunch the hair to promote waves/curls, and then "plop" the hair into a cotton t-shirt to dry, or put your hair into a bun or braid to dry. Step 3: Once your hair is totally dry, let it down and gently run your fingers through your waves.   Volume & texture The texturising wave spray can also be used at the root of the hair to give your hair some lift and added to the lengths to give you the perfect Brigitte Bardot bedhead look. To add volume, lift the hair and apply a couple of sprays of the product to the root area from an arm’s length distance. Then massage the product in, lifting the hair with your fingers to add volume. For the tousled look, apply the product to the lengths of your hair, scrunching and massaging to add texture.  Hold It can also be used to give your style added hold - for example, after curling (or for natural curls), you can use wave spray to extend the life of your curls. It acts like hairspray without the stickiness! Simply use a few sprays onto your curls, scrunching it in to activate the product and enhance your curls.  Propolis Infused Heat Protecting Spray This product is very straightforward. Our Heat Protecting Spray protects your hair from heat damage caused by blow-drying, styling tools and the sun. It protects hair from heat up to 230ᵒC/446ᵒF and a huge plus is that it also contains a UV filter to prevent sun damage. This makes it the perfect addition to your summer haircare routine! Styling Simply apply the product from an arm’s length distance before styling, brushing it through to ensure it is evenly distributed. It is good to allow it to absorb for a minute or two before going straight in with a curling tool or straightener. Ensure you apply it to each section you will be styling! Sun exposure Use this product all over the hair and top of the head before sun exposure, to help maintain your colour and prevent sun damage. Meet Negar Mirsalehi, sister of Gisou Founder Negin Mirsalehi, and the brand’s first-ever beekeeper-in-chief. “Since I was a little girl, I would spend every single Sunday in the Bee Garden with my father. I study and observe the trees, types of flowers that are blossoming in the Bee Garden and then I check on the bees. I open the hives, see if they’re healthy and have an open food supply and of course, check on the queen. If she’s healthy, she will lay eggs and that’s an indication of a healthy hive,” says Negar. The Gisou Bees Project is a special Gisou initiative in support of urban beekeeping practices to fight the declining bee populations worldwide. With this project, we show our support to urban beekeeping efforts by placing urban Gisou beehives in major cities around the world. Urban bees vs rural bees As an endangered species, bee populations are declining worldwide. At Gisou, it is our main focus to support bee populations in any way possible. Contrary to the belief that bees only thrive in rural areas, beehives in urban areas produce healthier bees because they have access to greater biodiversity and are not exposed to the harsh chemicals often used in agriculture.  As such, urban beekeeping is one way through which the health of bee populations can be strengthened. Aside from that, urban beehives contribute to the health of cities -  trees, shrubs, gardens and parks wouldn’t exist, let alone thrive in urban areas without healthy bees to pollinate them. Urban beekeeping doesn’t just support healthy bee populations, but also the communities the urban bees live in. The Gisou Bees Project For The Gisou Bees Project, we work together with local beekeepers who look after the Gisou bees on our behalf. Not only do we support urban bee populations this way, but we also support local beekeepers who continuously care for the bees and raise awareness in their local communities.  As we place our Gisou urban beehives in a city to improve the health of the city’s ecosystem, we therefore concurrently aim to carry out part of our mission - to raise awareness for the importance of bees.  The Bees Project in Paris  To launch our first Gisou Bees Project in June 2019, we brought a piece of the Mirsalehi Bee Garden to Paris by installing the honorary ‘Gisou at Galeries Lafayette Champs-Élysées Beehives’ on top of the urban rooftop garden of BHV (part of the Groupe Galeries Lafayette).  Today, our beehives in Paris contribute to the health of the Parisian ecosystem as they remain under the care of seasoned urban beekeeper, Gaël Cartron from Sous Les Fraises. The hives at BHV are surrounded by the urban Sous Les Fraises rooftop garden.  The Bees Project in New York  In New York City, we chose to work with beekeeper Andrew Coté, president of the New York City Beekeepers Association and founder of Andrew's Honey. In August 2019, we installed Gisou Beehives on a rooftop near Union Square together during our Take Out & Refill Pop-Up.  The installation of our beehives took place on August 17th 2019, in honor of National Honey Bee Day. Andrew Cote continues to care for the Gisou Beehives on our behalf, helping us to contribute to the livelihood of the bees and the overall urban ecosystem of New York City.  This bee season, Andrew added new hives, as the bees started to swarm meaning that the colony is thriving and expanding!  The Bees Project in Melbourne After our first beehives in Paris and New York, what better way to launch our third Gisou Beehive than with our fellow beekeeper Nicholas Dowse AKA @honey_fingers - an extraordinary beekeeper in Melbourne, Australia who’s efforts we’ve admired for years. Together, Nic and fellow beekeeper Georgah (@georgahcrane) take care of the Gisou bees on a rooftop in Fitzroy, Melbourne.  Honey Fingers is more than an urban beekeeping network - it’s a creative project that explores the intersections between farming, food, art, history, design and education, with bees taking the center stage.  The Next Step Moving forward, our intent is to expand the Gisou Bees Project to other cities around the world. Summer is here! Finally, it’s time to let your hair down and forget about the rain. While we all love summer, it is good to remember that a dramatic change in weather can be pretty stressful on your locks. We are here to give you a couple of quick and easy summer haircare routines and tips that will protect and nourish your hair during these sunny months.   How heat and humidity affect your hair What causes frizz? When it’s humid out and there’s a high level of moisture in the air, hydrogen molecules bind with the proteins in your hair, triggering curls and frizz. Our hair is extremely sensitive to humidity, which is why you immediately notice it in the texture of your hair. Straight hair becomes wavy, wavy hair becomes curly and curly hair becomes even curlier and frizzy.  How does sunlight damage your hair? You might already know that prolonged exposure to the sun - UVA and UVB rays - can damage your hair. Here’s why: sunlight and heat absorb moisture from your hair cuticles and it also degrades the protein in your hair strands, which leads to hair protein loss, leading to weak and brittle hair.  How to prep & protect your hair for swimming So how do you care for your hair when you’re at the beach or in the pool? As you probably already know, sun, salty water and chlorine can be extremely drying for the hair, making it more susceptible to breakage. This makes pre- and post-swim hair care routines extremely important. Pre-swim hair care routine Step 1: The night before you’ll be going swimming, apply our Honey Infused Scalp Treatment. You can use this twice per week during your holiday to keep your scalp hydrated. This is important, because your scalp will also be exposed to sunlight and your skin may also be dried out from the water. Simply apply this product in the evening, onto dry hair, leaving it on overnight to fully absorb. There is no need to rinse this out the next day, especially if you’ll be swimming!  Step 2: Before heading to the pool or beach, wet your hair in the shower, and follow up with a generous amount of Honey Infused Leave-In Conditioner from root to tip. This will prevent your hair from absorbing as much salt water or chlorine. This will also help lock in moisture, and prevent your hair from being stripped of its natural oils while you swim. Finally it will prevent tangling, and keep your hair soft and manageable after swimming. Step 3: Follow this up with the Propolis Infused Heat Protection Spray to protect your hair from sun damage. Prolonged exposure to the sun and UV-rays can damage the hair cuticle, leading to discoloration, dryness, split ends and frizziness. Step 4: Swim and enjoy! Dryness and damage are two of the most common hair concerns. It is no surprise that nearly everything that we put our hair through has the potential to damage it or leave it dried out. Thankfully, there are simple steps you can take to hydrate and moisturise your dry or damaged hair to bring it back to its former glory.  The difference between dry and damaged hair Dry and damaged hair are two different things. They may look very similar but require slightly different solutions. Let’s get into the difference between dry and damaged hair: Dry hair Dry hair is caused by a lack of natural oils on your hair. These oils act as lubricants all along the hair fibre to make it feel softer and look shinier. A little too much oil can weigh down your hair and make it look greasy. Too little oil results in brittle, frizzy, dry hair that is often accompanied by a flaky scalp and a rough texture. Damaged hair Each hair strand is protected by overlapping scales called cuticles. When your hair is healthy, these cuticles lie flat and leave your hair looking smooth and feeling soft. If your hair has been damaged, these cuticles are rough, lifted and even removed, resulting in dullness, split ends, breakage and frizz.  What causes dry or damaged hair? Cause #1: Environment The weather plays a huge role in your hair’s moisture levels. Cold, dry weather, combined with indoor heating can suck the moisture from your hair. Hot, sunny weather also puts your hair under strain. UV-rays damage the hair and break down its pigment and the sun’s heat pulls the moisture from your strands.  Cause #2: Haircare routine As much as we all love a fresh head of highlights or a beautiful balayage, all chemical styling processes damage the hair structure and exacerbate dryness. High temperatures from styling also cause your hair to lose a considerable amount of moisture. While dry shampoo and a slicked-back hairstyle can mask the signs of oily hair, nobody wants to deal with oily hair and an oily scalp on a daily basis. We are here to help explain some of the underlying causes of oily hair and recommend the best haircare products for oily hair. Why is my hair oily? Oily hair is often caused by an overproduction of sebum. Sebum is a substance produced by your body's sebaceous glands to help moisturise and protect your hair and skin. However, when it is overproduced, it can become uncomfortable.  There are a number of common reasons your sebaceous glands may start to overwork. For example: Diet Medication Hair care products Excessive stress Hormonal fluctuations Seasonal changes  Scalp issues We might not be able to solve all of these problems for you, however, there are two things can definitely help you tackle oily hair!  Hair care products for oily hair It may sound a little counter-intuitive, but the hair care products you are using may be the number one cause for oily hair.  1. Shampoo Sulfates We get it, your hair is oily, and you want a thorough cleanser to remove the oils and give you that squeaky-clean, oil-free feeling. There’s just one catch, often these shampoos contain harsh surfactants such as sodium lauryl sulfate. This ingredient creates clouds of cleansing foam that leave your hair feeling fresh and clean.  Unfortunately, that squeaky-clean feel actually works against grease-free hair in the long term. Using these harsh ingredients creates a vicious cycle of stripping hair of its natural oils causing your scalp to overproduce oil in an attempt to re-balance your oil levels. “Moisturizing” or “anti-frizz” shampoo While these kinds of shampoo are good for tackling dry or frizzy hair, they often contain heavy ingredients designed to create a fine coating on the hair, exactly what we want to avoid if your hair is already a little oily.  Honey Infused Hair Wash Enter the Honey Infused Hair Wash. Washing tips for oily hair Not only are your hair care products important, but the way you use them also plays a role in the state of your hair. Below we will provide you with a few of our top washing tips. Extend the time between washes We know it’s tough, but your hair will thank you in the long run. As we mentioned before, stripping your hair by washing it daily can cure those sebaceous glands to produce more oil. If you’re a daily washer, try washing every second day for two weeks, and then every third day for two weeks and so on. This way you can slowly adjust to fewer wash days. You can opt for a dry shampoo to help you through the transition.  Wash well Soak your hair: Make sure your hair is soaked before applying the shampoo - this is important as it will help you easily distribute the product throughout your hair. Less is more: apply 2 to 3 pumps of the Honey Infused Hair Wash into the palms of your hands, mixing with a small amount of water. Rub the palms together to create a gentle lather. Keep in mind that this product won’t create huge clouds of foam — this doesn’t mean you need more!  Focus on your scalp: once you’ve lathered the product, focus it on your scalp and take 2 to 3 minutes to gently massage the product in. Giving it this time will allow it to effectively break down oils.  Rinse and repeat: for oilier hair types, we recommend a rinse and repeat to really lift the oil and product out of your hair.  Rinse, rinse, rinse: this is super important, as leaving any of the product on the hair may leave it feeling heavy and weighed down. Condition: once you’ve rinsed, seal the cuticle and lock in moisture with the Honey Infused Conditioner, the perfect partner to the Honey Infused Hair Wash. Focus the conditioner on the mid-lengths to the ends of your hair and avoid the root area. There is nothing worse than going to the effort of curling your hair for a night out, only to have the curls drop within half an hour of leaving the house. Whether your hair is straight and fine, or heavy and frizzy, these 7 tips will help your curls last until the sun comes up.  1. Start with a good curling tool Let us introduce the first step in your curling routine, our beautiful Gisou Curling Tool, the perfect curl companion.  The Gisou Curling Tool features a nostalgic, 90s, honey dripper-inspired custom design, with a 1-inch ceramic barrel and 10 temperature settings. The wide range of temperature settings allows you to find the perfect heat for your hair type (we will get into this more later), and the 1-inch barrel is extremely versatile.  It is the perfect curling wand to create anything from tight curls to loose beachy waves. The ceramic barrel also ensures even heat distribution and helps to control frizz. 2. When and how to curl your hair?  We recommend not curling your hair right after washing it. Freshly washed hair is very soft and clean and will lose definition fast. Try to wait until 2 or 3 days after washing, as curls tend to hold better in dirtier hair. This is because the natural oils from your scalp give the hair more texture and natural hold so there’s a better chance the curls will last longer.  If you’re worried about your hair looking oily, apply a small amount of dry shampoo at the roots, to help absorb any extra oil. If this really isn’t your thing, you can also skip conditioner during your washing routine and then curl after washing, as this will prevent your hair from being too soft to hold your curls. If you do curl after your washing routine, make sure your hair is totally dry before curling - damp hair will frizz and your curls will drop!  3. Choose the right temperature setting for your hair type Right, it’s day 2, you have your curling tool ready, and now you have to choose a temperature setting. For finer hair types start out using the tool at lower temperatures - around 160 to 180 degrees. This also goes for colour-treated or highlighted hair to help prevent fading and damage.  For thick to coarse hair, you can go from 180 to 230 degrees. Keep in mind that if your curling tool is too hot, this can actually have the opposite effect and cause your style to drop - opt for the lowest possible setting for your hair type to prevent damage and lack of hold.   4. Section your hair and decide on the curling angle If you’d like to create a tight curl, point the top of your Curling Tool down, if you’d like more loose, beachy waves, keep the curling tool horizontal. To make your curls last longer, divide your hair into three sections and curl smaller pieces of hair. This will give you a tighter curl and better hold. The key to lasting curls: Prep, Prime and Protect Preparing your hair for the perfect curls will set you up for success. Start out by applying a pea-sized amount of our Propolis Infused Polishing Primer to the lengths of your hair (you can opt for a little more if your hair is on the longer side). Heat protecting spray should always be the last product you use before applying heat, as the curler will burn the product and not your hair!  6. Cool your curls  Once you have created an individual curl using the Curling Tool, hold the curl in your hand and allow it to cool. You can also clip it up or use a velcro roller to hold it in place whilst you do the rest of your hair.  This will help the curl to set, making them last longer. 7. Aftercare After allowing your curls to cool, you can let them down and gently run your fingers through them or use a wide-tooth comb if you are going for a beachy wave look. Brushing them with a normal brush will pull them out. Whilst they may be tighter than you want at the start we would recommend leaving them this way, as they will gradually drop over time.  As a final step for everlasting curls, apply a couple of sprays of our Propolis Infused Texturising Wave Spray.
